Fernanda Gomes - Profile

Fernanda Gomes carries her exhibition in her backpack. The content is not important content functions simply as an echo which materialises the things she has in her head. The things she needs she finds on site. Objects seem to gravitate to her as if in sleep. The material is not important, or conversely, all material is important. They are objects that have been deprived of their original purpose, discarded and ignored, unspectacularly imbued with a new appraisal integrated in the respective space that Fernanda Gomes decides to occupy. Every exhibition must be interpreted as an integrated work of art, a direct reflection of the spatial structure that she has encountered.

She releases the object from its original purpose determined by the combination of its specific form and material. In this manner, a superfluous cobblestone is transformed into a splash of white; a thin bed curls itself into a hitherto overlooked corner and appears to bring the space to life; twine describes delicate lines in space, or gold in its purest form transmutes to a tinsel wall hanging. Used cardboard assumes, as if by accident, a blanket of colour and stands lost in the corner. Everything is valuable. Thus a new esoteric language is developed that defies conventional deciphering.

At first glance, the arbitrary placement of the objects resembles a Lost & Found bureau. The size relations are distorted; everything appears delicate and fragile, provisional and ephemeral. A snapshot on the time axis on which all materials and objects imperceptibly move and change.

The observer is confronted with the space that references the “Here“ and “Now“. It challenges the observer to linger, to experience sensually. Fernanda Gomes says: “I try to concentrate on being there were I am at the moment. That sounds simple, it isn`t easy. That is my starting point not only for art“.

Fernanda Gomes is an artist who shows the influence of Arte Povera as well as Suprematism, Minimalism and Neoconcretismo. Her works are all untitled, she sees it as the invaluable privilege of fine arts to isolate objects from words. Long live the autonomy of visual language!
