Since the late 1960s, Gerhard Merz has developed a concept in his art of painting, which is heavily architecture-through thinking and the idea will work on refining the intended instead of mere rekeying. His work is supported by the belief that modernity with the tools of architecture and in art's own laws as size, color, light, surface and space allows that form of abstraction in which brought the desired void by any myth or reality surrogates for their effect is. For him, that can be advanced of the means by which the summoned by Ad Reinhardt dividing line between "everything else, and art" as a radical exception only legitimate in all its sharpness. Merz makes his work so the fundamental question of what can make art that makes no false promises, which is agnostic and cold. All this presupposes that art is conceived as an autonomous intellectual field, as a complex system developed historical and spiritual relationships. On the part of the architecture relates to Gerhard Merz mainly on Mies van der Rohe, in art, for example, to Marcel Duchamp, Kasimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, Barnett Newman and Ad Reinhardt. But the above mentioned benchmarks show that it never comes to Merz individualistic formulations determined work, but to maximize those formal clarity that may give an intellectual construction of each aesthetic appearance of their indispensable first time.
