Rineke Dijkstra - Profile

The Dutch photographer and video artist Rineke Dijkstra documented since the 1980s, people in moments of transition: A mother shortly after birth, bullfighters, still bloody from the fight, indifferent swimmers in age between childhood and adulthood, French Legionnaires strangers and young Israeli soldiers. Formal quote Dijkstra's pictures and video works by classical portraits with frontally positioned people, insulated against minimalist backgrounds. Characteristic of her work is restrained colors, from which only a Fill-reinforced natural light creates. Dijkstra's work permit in their often prosaic, yet cautious detachment percentage taken an intense look at the emotional state of their models: Subtle gestures or facial expressions often betray the game the fleeting moment between posturing and apparent Unwatched-being and let the individual portrayed as, vulnerable beings appear who are in precarious biographical or transitory stages. Rineke Dijkstra makes portrait photographs, like many other photographers also, with the same techniques. However, it seems to look much deeper to go. Her works reveal touching the fragile and ephemeral human presence. Rineke Dijkstra, born 1959, lives and works in Amsterdam. © ArtLogistics
